Wind Plants

Local Project
card artwork

Building a wind plant, also referred to as a wind farm, involves installing large numbers of turbines close to one another – in order to harvest the wind and generate electricity at scale, without producing greenhouse gas emissions.

There is tremendous potential for wind energy to supply electricity – in theory, filling non-forested, nonurban areas of land around the world with wind turbines could meet global electricity consumption 40 times over. In reality, this might get in the way of other essential activities like agriculture, but it shows that wind power has a huge role to play in meeting global energy needs.

Wind power complements solar power because, although it depends on variable weather, the sun provides solar energy during the day and wind speeds are often fastest overnight. However, unlike solar wind turbines can’t be installed everywhere and must be installed in areas that have consistent wind flow. Wind turbines do also have a small impact on the local environment because they need more land to operate and can impact local wildlife, especially birds. Still, this impact is minor when compared to the impacts of fossil energy, and can often be mitigated with proper planning and monitoring.
