Clean Energy R+D

Local Project

The United States has been the largest economy in the world through much of the 20th century and into the 21st century, making it responsible for a huge portion of greenhouse gas emissions, but also enabling the creation of clean technologies, often through direct government initiatives.

Given its resources, the United States is well placed to take a leading role with regards to funding and coordinating research, development, and demonstration of clean energy technologies and systems. More widely. Such R & D should help make existing and emerging technologies cheaper and more scalable, enabling other countries to transition away from fossil fuels more quickly too. Still, getting government funding for such R&D projects can be difficult. There is also the risk that money will not be spent strategically, such as on R&D for technologies that could not become commercial in time to play a significant role in climate solutions, or on technologies that only slightly reduce emissions. Still, such efforts remain crucially important.
