Treaty of the Amazon

Global Project

Deforestation of the Amazon is a major contributor to climate change. Historically, the Amazon rainforest has served as a massive carbon sink, storing carbon in its majestic, diverse vegetation, rather than allowing it to collect in the atmosphere. Yet its ability to keep carbon out of the atmosphere is dwindling as more of the forest is destroyed each year. In fact, in 2021 scientists confirmed for the first time that the Amazon was emitting more CO2 than it could capture. This shift from sink to source is caused largely by fires used to clear land for beef and soy production (largely for cattle feed), which also has a devastating impact on biodiversity. Turning one of the largest carbon sinks into a carbon source is a huge blow to our ability to reach zero net emissions. A treaty could prevent nations and corporations from continuing to remove biomass from the Amazon, especially through the use of intentional burning of the forest. This would allow the region to regenerate and continue to store carbon.
