Eco-Fascist Government

Crisis

Far right political movements are making false claims that the climate emergency is caused by population growth in the Majority World. The opposite is true: high consumption in wealthy nations, both today and in the past, is a leading cause of environmental destruction. Majority World communities have far less environmental impact, especially in places where people have less access to electricity, goods and vehicles.

False eco-fascist claims are used to argue for tighter border controls, incorrectly portraying the consequences of the climate emergency — such as the potential for people to be forcibly displaced by disasters and conflict — as causes. Far right movements are doing this to further their existing agenda and to try and use peoples’ concern around the climate emergency to spread their own harmful ideologies.

Migrant and Majority World communities suffer disproportionately from the effects of the climate emergency. Eco-fascist politics could make this worse by imposing even more harmful and discriminatory migration policies, while making the climate emergency worse for all by failing to tackle the root cause: environmentally-destructive production and consumption.

Eco-fascist politics could proliferate as societies are made less stable by climate shocks, with far right politicians and supporters offering false solutions in emergency situations when societies are more vulnerable and may be less able to hold politicians to account.

Societies can be more resistant to extremist politics if there is widespread understanding of the real causes of the climate emergency. More international solidarity, greater government support to help people reduce their environmental impact, and more cohesive, mutually supportive and stable communities will also help build resistance to extremist politics taking hold.
